Born Christopher John Davison on 15 October 1948 in Argentina, he began as an art rock performer before shifting toward pop songwriting. Through the 1970s he built a following stronger in Norway and Brazil than in his home market, though a 1975 track called "A Spaceman Came Travelling" became a Christmas perennial. Then in 1986 "The Lady in Red" broke through - a love song that climbed to number one in several countries and gave him two US top 40 entries. The hit rewired his career, turning modest chart presence in the UK into worldwide recognition and sales that now exceed 45 million albums.
