Chaim Herzog

Born in Belfast in 1918 to Ireland's Chief Rabbi, Chaim Herzog grew up in Dublin before moving to Mandatory Palestine at seventeen. He fought with the Haganah during the Arab revolt, served in the British Army through World War II, and stayed in uniform through Israel's independence war in 1948, rising to major-general before retiring in 1962. He pivoted to business and law, co-founding what became one of Israel's largest firms, then returned to public life as UN ambassador from 1975 to 1978. Elected to the Knesset in 1981, he was chosen for the presidency two years later and served the constitutional maximum - two five-year terms - before stepping down in 1993. He died in 1997 and was buried on Mount Herzl; his son Isaac holds the office now, the first father-son succession in Israeli presidential history.
