Queen Regnant of Navarre
She held the crown of Navarre for thirty-four years, ruling a small kingdom wedged between France and Spain at the height of their territorial hunger.
Catherine became Queen of Navarre in 1483 at fifteen, inheriting a realm squeezed between two expanding powers. She carried a string of titles across the Pyrenees—Duchess of Gandia, Montblanc, and Peñafiel, Countess of Foix, Bigorre, and Ribagorza, Viscountess of Béarn—each one a piece of the intricate landholding puzzle that defined sovereignty in that corner of Europe. She ruled through decades of pressure and maneuvering, keeping Navarre intact until her death in February 1517.
