Bruce Leslie McLaren arrived in Formula One in 1958 and finished runner-up in the 1960 championship driving for Cooper. He won four Grands Prix across 13 seasons and took the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans with Chris Amon in a Ford GT40, plus the Canadian-American Challenge Cup in 1967 and 1969. In 1963 he founded Bruce McLaren Motor Racing, and the team scored its first Formula One win at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix - making him one of only three drivers, with Jack Brabham and Dan Gurney, to win a World Championship race in a car bearing his own name. On 2 June 1970, while testing the McLaren M8D at Goodwood Circuit in Sussex, he was killed. The team he left behind has since won ten World Constructors' Championships.
