About this person
Denis Clive Hulme was born in the South Island on 18 June 1936, son of a World War II sniper. He entered Formula One in 1965 and took the Drivers' Championship with Brabham in 1967, becoming New Zealand's sole F1 world champion with eight wins and 33 podiums across ten seasons through 1974. Early on he raced barefoot for better throttle feel until European regulations ended that in 1960. Beyond F1 he dominated the Canadian-American Challenge Cup with McLaren, winning the Can-Am Drivers' title twice and helping the team to five straight constructors' crowns from 1967 to 1971. He retired from Formula One at the end of 1974 but kept racing Australian Touring Cars until his death on 4 October 1992.
