Swedish nun, mystic, and saint (c.1303–1373)
A 14th-century Swedish mystic who founded a religious order and became one of six patron saints of Europe — her visions and writings carried enough weight to outlast kingdoms.
Born around 1304, Bridget Birgersdotter came from Swedish nobility and was known as the Princess of Nericia. She experienced mystical visions that led her to establish the Bridgettines, a new religious order. Her daughter, Catherine of Vadstena, followed in her spiritual path. Bridget died on 23 July 1373, but her influence stretched beyond Sweden's borders. She was eventually named one of six patron saints of Europe, standing alongside Benedict of Nursia, Cyril and Methodius, Catherine of Siena, and Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
