About this person
Boris Bondarev was born in 1980 and entered Russia's foreign service, eventually landing at the permanent mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva in 2019. He worked there through the opening years of the pandemic and into early 2022. When Russia invaded Ukraine that February, he stayed at his post for three months. Then in May 2022 he resigned and released a statement condemning the war. The move made him the first Russian diplomat to publicly break with Moscow over the invasion while it was still unfolding.
