Great Khan of Outer Mongolia (1869–1924)
The third-highest figure in Tibetan Buddhism became Mongolia's last theocratic monarch when the Qing empire collapsed, ruling a new khanate where spiritual authority and political sovereignty fused in one person.
Born in Tibet on 13 October 1869, he was recognized as the 8th Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, placing him in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy directly below the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama. When the Xinhai Revolution fractured the Qing dynasty in 1911, Mongolia declared de facto independence and turned to its highest lama for leadership. He became khan of the Bogd Khanate, holding both temporal and spiritual power over the new state.
