Over six years he composed letters and books abrogating Islamic law, establishing Bábism with new rules on marriage, divorce, inheritance, and a social order centered on unity, modernized education, and the elevation of women. His followers, drawn from the poor and urban tradesmen, met violent opposition from clergy and state. On 9 July 1850, he was tied in a public square in Tabriz before a firing squad of 750 rifles; the first volley left him unharmed and missing, the second killed him. His remains were hidden for decades, then interred in 1909 in a shrine on Mount Carmel. In 1863, Baháʼu'lláh claimed to be the promised one, and most Bábís became Baháʼís - today eight million strong, venerating the Báb as the forerunner who pointed beyond himself.
