About

Born Ayurbarwada on April 9, 1285, his name meant "the mountain of longevity" in Sanskrit — a pointed contrast to his older brother Qaišan's "mountains and seas." Mentored by the Confucian scholar Li Meng, he succeeded peacefully to the throne and became the fourth emperor of the Yuan dynasty in 1320, taking the regnal name Buyantu Khan: "blessed Khan." He was the first Yuan emperor to actively adopt Confucian principles into governance, undoing his brother Khayisan's policies and reinstituting the civil service examination system that had been abandoned under Mongol rule.
