Born 13 February 1915, Aung San moved through political philosophies — socialism, briefly communism, then his own People's Revolutionary Party — all aimed at one end: throwing off the British. He fled Burma before World War II to seek foreign help, served as minister of war under the Japanese occupation, then switched sides as Japan faltered and merged his forces with the Allies. After the war he negotiated independence in the Aung San-Attlee agreement and led his Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League to victory in the 1947 election.
