Augustine was prior of a Benedictine monastery in Rome when Pope Gregory I chose him in 595 to lead a mission into Britain, targeting King Æthelberht of Kent - a strategic pick, since Æthelberht held sway over neighbouring kingdoms and was married to Bertha, a Christian Frankish princess. The missionaries nearly turned back before reaching Kent, but Gregory pushed them forward. In 597 Augustine landed on the Isle of Thanet and made his way to Canterbury, where Æthelberht converted and gave the mission land outside the city walls to build a monastery. Augustine was consecrated bishop and oversaw a mass baptism of thousands on Christmas Day that same year. Gregory sent reinforcements in 601; Augustine established Roman bishops at London and Rochester by 604, founded a school for Anglo-Saxon priests, and tried - unsuccessfully - to bring the native British bishops under his authority. He arranged for Laurence of Canterbury to succeed him and died around 604, venerated as a saint soon after.
