Queen consort of the Belgians (1905-1935)
A Swedish princess who became Belgium's queen at twenty-eight and died in a car crash seventeen months later, mourned across two kingdoms for work she barely had time to finish.
Born Astrid Sofia Lovisa Thyra on 17 November 1905 into Sweden's House of Bernadotte, she married Leopold, Duke of Brabant, in November 1926 and settled into Belgian royal life. The couple had three children: a daughter, Joséphine-Charlotte, who would become Grand Duchess Consort of Luxembourg, and two sons who both later reigned as King of the Belgians. When Leopold's father died on 23 February 1934, Astrid became queen and threw herself into charitable work for women and children. She held the title for seventeen months.
