Born 6 June 1934, Albert II was the son of King Leopold III and Queen Astrid of Sweden, younger brother to Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg and King Baudouin. He married Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria and raised three children while his older brother wore the crown. When Baudouin died in 1993, Albert succeeded him at fifty-nine.
