About this person

Asha Bhosle was born into the Mangeshkar family on 8 September 1933, younger sister to Lata Mangeshkar, and began singing in an India where playback was just taking shape. Her soprano range carried her across every form - film songs, ghazals, qawwalis, classical ragas, pop, folk, Rabindra Sangeet - and she moved between them with a versatility that became her signature. The awards accumulated: seven Filmfare trophies for Best Female Playback Singer, two National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke in 2000, the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, two Grammy nominations. In 2011, Guinness named her the most recorded artist in music history. At 80, in 2013, she stepped in front of the camera for the first time in Mai and drew critical acclaim for the performance. She died on 12 April 2026, having spent more than 80 years inside the sound of Indian cinema.
