Born in the outskirts of Istakhr around 180 AD, Ardashir was sent at seven to Fort Darabgard, eventually becoming its commander. After his father Papak and brother Shapur died in quick succession, he seized control of Pars, minting coins with his own face in front and his father's behind — a quiet declaration.
