Princess (1743-1808)
An archduchess who never married, never ruled a territory, and spent twenty-six years running a finishing school for noblewomen in the Austrian Alps.
Maria Elisabeth Josefa Johanna Antonia was born 13 August 1743, daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I, which made her an archduchess of Austria and princess of Tuscany, Bohemia, and Hungary by birth. In 1780 she became abbess of the Theresian Institution of Noble Ladies in Innsbruck, a post she held for twenty-six years until 1806. She died 22 September 1808.
