English mountaineer (1902–1924)
He vanished on Everest in 1924 with George Mallory, last seen pushing for the summit. Whether they made it before dying became mountaineering's oldest unsolved mystery — until parts of his body surfaced a century later.
Andrew Comyn "Sandy" Irvine was born 8 April 1902. A British mountaineer, he joined the 1924 British Mount Everest expedition — the third attempt on the world's highest peak. On 8 or 9 June 1924, he and climbing partner George Mallory disappeared high on the Northeast Ridge. They were last spotted alive below the summit, leaving a question that would haunt the climbing world for a hundred years: had they reached the top before they died? In 2024, Irvine's partial remains were finally discovered on the mountain.
