Born 1 October 1949, André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu grew up in Maastricht and chose the violin. The turn came when he founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra, betting that waltz music - considered dusty repertoire - could pull crowds if staged with scale and warmth. It worked. He and the orchestra now tour worldwide, often playing stadiums, a circuit usually reserved for pop acts. He still lives in Maastricht and performs regularly at the Vrijthof, the square where the whole improbable model began.
