A Dutch violinist who turned Old World waltzes into a stadium business, filling arenas most rock bands can't.
Born 1 October 1949, André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu grew up in Maastricht and chose the violin. The turn came when he founded the Johann Strauss Orchestra, betting that waltz music—considered dusty repertoire—could pull crowds if staged with scale and warmth. It worked. He and the orchestra now tour worldwide, often playing stadiums, a circuit usually reserved for pop acts. He still lives in Maastricht and performs regularly at the Vrijthof, the square where the whole improbable model began.
