The Estonian composer who invented tintinnabuli — a minimalist technique rooted in Gregorian chant — and became the most performed living composer in the world multiple times between 2011 and 2025.
Arvo Pärt was born 11 September 1935 in Estonia. Since the late 1970s he has worked in the stark minimalist style he created, building pieces from tintinnabuli, a method partly inspired by Gregorian chant. That shift produced Für Alina in 1976, then Fratres in 1977 and Spiegel im Spiegel in 1978 — works that became his most performed. From 2011 to 2018, and again in 2022 and 2025, he held the title of most performed living composer in the world. The Arvo Pärt Centre opened to the public in Laulasmaa in 2018.
