Amenemhat III likely ruled alongside his father Senusret III for twenty years before taking sole power, stepping into a kingdom his father had already subjugated and centralized. He poured that stability into building: a temple to Sobek in Faiyum, colossal statues at Biahmu, excavation work at Lake Moeris, and two pyramids - one at Dahshur, one at Hawara - the first pharaoh since Sneferu to build more than one for himself. He fed the program by strip-mining Egypt and Sinai: turquoise and copper from Serabit el-Khadim, schist from Wadi Hammamat, amethyst, granite, diorite, alabaster. Military expeditions were rare; a small one reached Kumma in his ninth year, a handful went to Punt. He reigned at least 45 years, possibly 46, and near the end elevated Amenemhat IV as co-regent. Sobekneferu closed the dynasty after him.
