Alfonsina Storni
Argentine writer and poet · Argentina · On the map · Writers · Lived 1892 to 1938 · aged 46
Alfonsina Storni brought a woman's fury and loneliness to Spanish-language modernism at a moment when the form was largely a men's club. Her poems interrogated desire, autonomy, and the cost of both - sharpening the lyric into something close to a knife.
Alfonsina Storni is read about 549 times a day, in 46 languages.

About this person
Born in Switzerland in 1892, Storni moved to Argentina as a child and grew into one of the era's most distinctive modernist voices. She wrote plays and verse that cut against the grain of expected feminine sentiment, working as a teacher and journalist while publishing collections that made her name across Latin America. By the 1930s her poems had become darker, more experimental, the early romanticism burned away. In October 1938, facing terminal illness, she walked into the sea at Mar del Plata.
