Alexander was born 1 August 1893 at Tatoi palace outside Athens, the second son of Constantine I. He became king on 11 June 1917 after the Entente Powers and Venizelist faction forced his father and elder brother into exile during World War I. With no political experience, he was stripped of authority by Venizelos and confined to his palace while the prime minister governed with Allied backing.
