He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his performance as Woodrow Wilson in the biopic Wilson (1944). However, his career in the United States was hampered by McCarthyism, and he spent the rest of his career in the United Kingdom.
