About this person
Alexander J Honnold was born August 17, 1985, and built a reputation as a rock climber willing to attempt what most considered suicidal. In June 2017, he became the first person to free solo El Capitan's Freerider route in Yosemite - 880 metres at grade 5.13a, alone on the wall with nothing but chalk and nerve. The New York Times called it "one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever". Two years earlier, he and Tommy Caldwell had won a Piolet d'Or for completing the Fitz Traverse in Patagonia over five days. He wrote the memoir Alone on the Wall in 2015 with David Roberts, and in 2018 the documentary Free Solo - which tracked his El Cap ascent - won an Academy Award and a BAFTA. On January 25, 2026, he free soloed the Taipei 101 tower, the tallest buildering climb in history at roughly grade 5.11, still treating skyscrapers and cliffs as problems to be solved without a safety net.
