Roman emperor (207-253)
A Roman general who held the throne for eight weeks. He won the purple by acclamation after routing the Goths, killed his predecessor in battle, then fell to his own soldiers when a third claimant marched south with superior numbers.
Marcus Aemilius Aemilianus commanded the legions on the Moesian frontier when Goths crossed the border around 253. His victory over the raiders earned him the loyalty of his troops, who proclaimed him emperor on the spot. He marched into Italy and met Trebonianus Gallus at Interamna Nahars in August; Gallus died in the fight. A month later, word arrived that Valerian, another general, had declared himself emperor and was moving toward Rome with a larger force. Aemilianus's men, reading the odds, killed him in September. He was roughly forty-six and had ruled for two months.
