About this person
Born in Beledweyne in 1908, Aden Abdulle Osman Da'ar studied at government schools and worked as a community organizer under Italian colonial administration from 1929 to 1941, advocating for independence. He joined the Somali Youth League in 1944, became Secretary of its Beledweyne section in 1946, and climbed to Vice President of the Mudug Regional Council by 1953. From 1954 to 1956 he led the League itself, won re-election in 1958, and served simultaneously as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. On 1 July 1960 - the day the UN recognized Somalia's independence and it united with the former British Somaliland - he was elected the first president of the Somali Republic. He held office until 6 July 1967, focused on dismantling colonialism's legacy and forging unity. He died in 2007 at ninety-eight.
