About this person
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was a university professor and dean at SIMAD University, which he co-founded, before entering politics. In 2012 he was elected president of the Transitional Federal Government, a role that landed him on Time's 100 most influential people list in 2013. Two years later he invited Ethiopian troops into the African Union mission - controversial given the 2006 invasion - and his administration became known for corruption, abuse of power, and curbs on the press. He lost in 2017, founded the Union for Peace and Development Party, and won a second term in 2022. That presidency has been disputed since 2026.
