German poet and botanist (1781–1838)
A German poet and botanist who wrote in a language he had to learn in exile, carrying two worlds in one name.
Born 30 January 1781, Adelbert von Chamisso carried the French name de Boncourt after his family's estate, a relic of origins that would shape his split identity. He became a poet and writer in German, then turned to botany, building a second career in science. The two pursuits—verse and taxonomy—ran in parallel through a life lived between languages. He died 21 August 1838, leaving work in both fields that bore the mark of someone who had learned to see the world twice.
