Bohemian missionary and saint (c.956–997)
A Czech bishop who walked into Prussian territory in 997 with a cross and a conversion pitch, and didn't walk back out. His death made him a saint claimed by three countries at once.
Born Vojtěch around 956, he became Bishop of Prague before turning his attention outward — first to the Hungarians and Poles, then to the Baltic Prussians. On 23 April 997, his mission to convert the Prussians ended in martyrdom. The death did more than the life: he was declared patron saint of the Czech Republic, Poland, and the Duchy of Prussia, and patron of the Archdiocese of Esztergom in Hungary. Tradition credits him with composing Hospodine, pomiluj ny, the oldest Czech hymn, and Bogurodzica, the oldest known Polish anthem, though neither authorship has been confirmed.
