Abbas was born around 15 May 647, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib — fourth caliph and first Shia imam — and Fatima bint Hizam, known as Umm al-Banin. On 10 October 680, he fought as standard-bearer for his half-brother Husayn ibn Ali at the Battle of Karbala against the forces of Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Surrounded and parched, the family of the Prophet Muhammad had no water. Abbas made a desperate run to the Euphrates and was killed in the attempt.
