About this person
Born in Kampala to parents of Indian descent, Mamdani moved to New York at seven and graduated from Bowdoin in 2014 with a degree in Africana studies. He worked as a housing counselor and spent time as a rapper before managing campaigns for progressive candidates in the city. In 2020 he knocked out five-term incumbent Aravella Simotas in the Democratic primary for the 36th Assembly district, representing Astoria and Long Island City, and won reelection unopposed in 2022 and 2024. He announced his mayoral run in October 2024 on a platform most consultants would call unelectable: rent freezes, universal child care, a $30 minimum wage by 2030. In June 2025 he upset Cuomo in the Democratic primary, then won the general that November to become the youngest mayor in modern city history.
