About this person

Zakir Abdul Karim Naik was born 18 October 1965 in India and founded the Islamic Research Foundation and Peace TV, delivering talks that quoted from multiple religious texts in English rather than Arabic or Urdu. His approach - suit and tie, no single Islamic school - set him apart and made him a known figure across the Islamic world. In 2016, while he was abroad, the Modi government accused him of propagating hate speech and money laundering, banned his foundation and his network, and issued charges he has consistently denied. He did not return to India, became a permanent resident of Malaysia, and is now a wanted fugitive. The National Investigation Agency tried three times to secure an Interpol red notice for his arrest and was refused each time for insufficient evidence, while Peace TV remains banned in India, Bangladesh, Canada, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom under hate speech laws.
