Something wrong? He turned heavy metal into a vehicle for baroque shredding - arpeggios at lightning speed, minor-key runs straight out of Paganini, the electric guitar treated like a classical instrument under distortion.

About this person
Born Lars Johan Yngve Lannerbäck in Sweden on 30 June 1963, he surfaced in the 1980s with a technique no one in metal had heard: neoclassical playing, all sweep-picked fury and harmonic-minor precision. The style made him a name, and he kept at it - 22 studio albums across more than 40 years, the approach never diluted. He became a Swedish-American, and the consensus settled: one of the best guitarists rock and metal have produced.
