Yazdegerd III, grandson of Khosrow II, was placed on the throne in 632 as a child figurehead after his aunt Boran's murder, inheriting an empire already hollowed out by civil war, Byzantine conflict, and invasions by Göktürks and Khazars. Real power sat with feuding commanders and aristocrats while the young shah watched.
