Born around 1142, William took the throne of Alba in 1165 and held it until his death on 4 December 1214. The span - just shy of 49 years - set a Scottish record that stood until 1603. Nicknamed Garbh, "the Rough", he was also called "the Lion", though the source of that sobriquet is left to conjecture. He died having seen more winters as king than most of his predecessors saw as men.
