British civil servant (1793-1841)
Sir William Hay Macnaghten, 1st Baronet, was a British civil servant in India, who played a major part in the First Anglo-Afghan War. He was also briefly appointed the governor of the Bombay Presidency, but he was unable to assume his post, having been killed by Wazir Akbar Khan in Afghanistan.
