About this person
Werner Karl Otto Theodor von Haeften was born 9 October 1908. He trained as a lawyer before the war pulled him into the Wehrmacht, where he rose to Oberleutnant. By 1944 he had joined the military conspiracy against Adolf Hitler, a network of officers who saw assassination as the only way out. On 20 July 1944 he played a direct role in the attempt at Hitler's field headquarters. The plot failed. He was executed the next day, 21 July 1944.
