Something wrong? He ran China's economy through a decade of explosive growth, steering policy toward farmers and the interior while the coast boomed - then left office under a cloud of family wealth reports that complicated the reformist image he'd carefully built.

Born in Tianjin in 1942, Wen Jiabao joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1965 and spent his early career as a geologist in Gansu, rising to Vice Minister of Geology and Mineral Resources before his 1985 promotion to the Politburo. He served as director of the party's General Office from 1986 to 1993 and was present at Tiananmen Square in 1989 as Zhao Ziyang's personal secretary. By 1998 he was Vice Premier under Zhu Rongji, overseeing agriculture, finance, and environment. In 2002 he became third-ranking member of the Politburo Standing Committee, then Premier in March 2003. Over the next decade he shifted growth strategy inland, cut agricultural taxes, launched massive infrastructure spending, managed the SARS epidemic, and deployed a four trillion yuan stimulus after the 2008 financial crisis and Sichuan earthquake. Reports late in his tenure that his family had accumulated significant wealth shadowed the exit of a man seen as the reformist wing's leading voice. Li Keqiang succeeded him in 2013.
