About this person
Tyler emerged in 1381 as the leader of a rebellion that began when English peasants refused to pay a new poll tax. He marched a group of rebels from Canterbury to London, where the uprising spread quickly and won early victories against royal authority. The rebels demanded economic and social reforms from King Richard II, who agreed to negotiate. On 15 June 1381, during talks at Smithfield, officers loyal to the king killed Tyler. The rebellion collapsed soon after.
