About this person
Volker Türk was born 27 August 1965 in Austria and trained as a lawyer. He rose through UN ranks until October 2022, when he took the role of High Commissioner for Human Rights - the organization's top voice on abuses, atrocities, and freedoms under threat. The job puts him in the room with every nation's record, from war crimes to crackdowns, carrying a mandate with no army behind it. He speaks, documents, and names what others would rather stay quiet.
