Vladimir Yevgrafovich Tatlin was born in December 1885 in the final years of imperial Russia. He worked as a painter and stage designer before 1919, when he began designing The Monument to the Third International — a massive helical structure intended to dwarf Paris's iron landmark and house the Communist International's offices.
