Vladimir Yevgrafovich Tatlin was born in December 1885 in the final years of imperial Russia. He worked as a painter and stage designer before 1919, when he began designing The Monument to the Third International — a massive helical structure intended to dwarf Paris's iron landmark and house the Communist International's offices. The tower was never realized, but the drawings and model secured his place at the center of Soviet avant-garde art alongside Kazimir Malevich through the 1920s.
