Vladimir Borisovitch Pastukhov was born 22 April 1963. Trained as a lawyer and advocate, he moved into political science and eventually landed at University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies as an honorary professor. His signature work attempts something unusual: writing down the unwritten rules, the tacit understandings and informal power structures that shape Russian reality beneath any formal constitution. He calls it a "constitution by concepts" - a code for how things actually work when the written law and the lived system diverge.
