Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was born in April 1930 and worked as a theatre director before entering politics. In 1980 she became Iceland's fourth president and the world's first democratically elected woman to hold the office. She served until 1996, a sixteen-year span that made her the longest-serving elected female head of state on record. After leaving office she became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and joined the Club of Madrid.
