About

Víctor Jara taught, directed theater, and wrote poetry before becoming central to the Nueva canción chilena movement — new Chilean folk sounds that rose during Salvador Allende's presidency. He served as a cultural ambassador through the late 1960s into 1973, an open admirer of Che Guevara and the Allende government. The Chilean military arrested him shortly after the 11 September 1973 coup. He was tortured during interrogations, shot dead, and his body dumped in a Santiago shantytown street.
