Vera Zasulich

Vera Ivanovna Zasulich was a Russian revolutionary and socialist activist. Born into impoverished nobility, Zasulich became involved in radical politics in the late 1860s. In 1878, she gained international renown for attempting to assassinate Fyodor Trepov, the governor of St. Petersburg, to protest his abuse of a political prisoner. In a high-profile case that highlighted the unpopularity of the tsarist government, a sympathetic jury acquitted her.
