Born in Kazan in 1955, Gerasimov was commissioned from tank school into the Soviet Army in 1977. He saw combat in the Second Chechen War, serving as chief of staff and then commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army, before moving through commands of three military districts. Putin appointed him Chief of the General Staff in November 2012, replacing Nikolai Makarov. After Russia seized Crimea in 2014 and intervened in Syria, Gerasimov's influence deepened across the security establishment - he is reportedly the architect of what became known as the Gerasimov doctrine. In January 2023 he took command of the Joint Group of Forces in Ukraine, replacing Sergey Surovikin. A year later the ICC issued a warrant for his arrest.
