King of Denmark
A medieval Danish king who pulled his country out of civil war and set the stage for its golden age — though the zenith came under his son, not him.
Valdemar I Knudsen took the throne in 1154 after Denmark had been fractured by internal strife. Over twenty-eight years he stabilized the kingdom and began its ascent, laying the groundwork for what would become Denmark's medieval peak. He died on 12 May 1182, and it was his son, Valdemar II, who inherited the momentum and carried Denmark to its highest point.
