About

Born 28 July 1952, the only son of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit, he was named crown prince in 1972 at age 20. For four decades he waited. When his father died on 13 October 2016, he asked to delay the formal accession to mourn; he accepted the throne on 1 December 2016, though the government backdated his reign to the day of his father's death. At 64, he became the oldest person to take the Thai throne. His coronation stretched across three days in May 2019. He is Rama X, tenth monarch of the Chakri dynasty that has ruled since 1782.
