Born in New York to Black Panther parents and raised by his mother Afeni Shakur, he moved to the Bay Area in 1988 and released 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, establishing himself as West Coast hip-hop's sharpest political voice. Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z... and Me Against the World deepened that reputation, but after being shot five times in a New York studio lobby and serving eight months on sexual abuse charges, he signed to Death Row Records in 1995 and pivoted hard.
